Dental x-rays are done for more accurate assessments especially when the damage on the tooth is not superficial.

If your tooth is minimally damaged, the dentist can simply smoothen the surface by filling it in. There are also a few cases wherein the tooth doesn’t require immediate attention, especially if it is just damaged minimally. But frequently, the dentist doesn’t ignore these cases, but assures the patients ample protection by using porcelain or composite veneers to bind their teeth.

If your tooth was badly fractured, and you can feel pain whenever you chew or drink cold beverages, your tooth needs a crown. This crown is a cap that doesn’t only cover the tooth and protect it from further damage, but also gives the tooth a desirable appearance. In some badly fractured teeth, a crown is not fitted anymore, Instead, the bad tooth is filled in. The crowns and fillings must be made to be of the same color or structure as the other existing teeth for a pleasant and more natural appearance. There are also cases in which a tooth doesn’t look badly fractured but deep inside it is already badly damaged. In a case like this, a more serious job must be done to repair it. If repairing it will not help, then the tooth must be extracted and replaced.

The important thing is to immediately see a dentist if you have a chipped tooth whether it incurred minimal or serious damages. Do not wait to experience unbearable pain before seeing a dentist. Take note that an untreated chipped tooth with a minimal damage can lead to the speedy deterioration of the tooth, and may result to a more serious tooth infection later on.
